The family of a 32-year-old Los Angeles woman who was killed by a teenager who drove more than 100 miles an hour in a Lamborghini SUV last year reached an agreement for $ 18.85 million this week, the family’s lawyer said.
Monique Munoz was returning from work when Brendan Khuri, who was 17 at the time, ran a red light and crashed into his Lexus at 106 mph. She died within 15 minutes.
Huri pleaded guilty to manslaughter last April and was sentenced to nine months in juvenile detention.

Daniel Gichi, the chief lawyer representing Munoz’s family, called the $ 18.85 million deal a “significant milestone” for Munoz’s relatives.
“The Munoz family may finally get some end to this horrific tragedy,” Gichi said in a statement. “It was never about money for the Munoz family, but about acknowledging Brendan Huri’s misconduct, which led to the death of their only daughter, and ensuring that he was brought to justice. Today’s agreement is proof of their efforts and is a step closer to justice. “
Part of the Munoz family’s case included images that Brendan Huri and his father, wealthy Los Angeles businessman James Khuri, posted on social media about racing their vehicles.
“I have to win, but if I lose, I still have a son,” James Khuri wrote in a photo on Instagram in front of his more than 1.9 million followers, according to the lawsuit.

James Khury’s profile on Forbes describes him as a “serial entrepreneur” who “owns four real estate companies and five manufacturing and distribution companies”.
Munoz’s mother, Carol Cardona, expressed concern in the weeks after the crash that her family would not receive justice due to the privileges and wealth of the Huri family.
“He killed my daughter,” Cardona told Fox News Digital last year. “It is very disappointing and I believe he is safe [the] status of his father. “
