A 40-year-old Lethbridge woman is facing several serious charges, including attempted murder, after a 54-year-old woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries on July 14.
Police say the accused, Courtney Louise Shaw, entered the Lethbridge Legal Guidance building around 1:30 p.m. armed with an airsoft gun and a knife.
Four employees were present at the time.

When Shaw asked to speak to a specific attorney and was told the attorney was not available, police said she asked to use the restroom.
10 minutes later, Shaw allegedly emerged from the restroom, pointed the gun at two of the employees, threatening to kill them.

One employee was able to hide under a desk and call 911.

Police say Shaw pulled out a knife and forced the victim into the office, closing the door while the other three employees fled.

After about an hour of negotiating with Shaw on the phone, police determined there was an immediate threat to the hostage’s life and the tactical team entered the building.

Police said Shaw was found in possession of a knife and was taken into custody.
Officials said the victim was stabbed multiple times in the neck and was taken to the hospital by ambulance with life-threatening injuries.
The victim underwent surgery and his condition is stabilized.
Shaw faces a total of 16 charges: one count each of attempted murder, aggravated assault, taking a hostage, use of an imitation firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, four counts of unlawful imprisonment, four charges of uttering threats and three counts of assault with a weapon.

This is not the first time Shaw has faced legal charges.
In 2008, she was found not guilty of arson after setting her own home on fire.
A report found that she was suffering from a psychiatric disorder at the time.
Shaw remains in custody on his latest charges and is due in court on July 22.
