The city of Ottawa is working to recover more than half a million dollars it paid after “illegal action” against a partner organization.
The city’s chief financial officer told the council that city officials had learned of a possible $ 558,000 payment problem Monday in a note sent Thursday afternoon.
After staff confirmed the fraudulent transaction, the note said it was reported to the city’s financial institution, Ottawa police and the chief auditor.
The city is working with police and the financial institution to recover the money. Ottawa police told the CBC they did not confirm or deny active investigations involving the organization.
City officials are also working on a “comprehensive” internal investigation. They confirmed that no personal information from the city of Ottawa had been shared.
This is not the first time the city has lost a lot of money from fraudsters. In 2019, the city lost about $ 130,000 after the cashier received an email for fraud.
The city said that this is an active police investigation, will not comment further.
