Naval Academy student Luke Gabriel Byrd died while hiking in Chile after falling over a waterfall

A 21-year-old Naval Academy student died while hiking in Chile and apparently accidentally fell over a waterfall, officials said Monday. NBC News reported that Luke Gabriel Byrd, a midshipman who studied ocean engineering, was hiking near the Salto El Agua waterfall in Plasilla, Chile, with another student when he tripped and died. Officials said Chilean authorities found Byrd’s body near the falls the next morning. A native of Texas, Byrd is the second Naval Academy midshipman to die in the past two months. His friend and fellow Midshipman Travis Delgado said Byrd was “unbelievably smart” and willing to[p] everyone at the drop of a hat.
