“So before we go on vacation, I have some news to share with you,” Cordon said in his opening monologue. “I started running this show seven and a half years ago and there’s no other way to say it – it changed my life. Love it. I love all the people who work here. I am so proud of what we have achieved. It was beyond my wildest, boldest dreams. “

The 43-year-old man continued to say that he had extended his contract with the network while the audience applauded and applauded.

“But wait, wait,” Cordon joked. “Wait. I appreciate it. It’s actually only half the story. The other half is, the sadder news is… this will be my last visit.”

“Aww,” the crowd replied in one voice.

“Don’t you dare!” Cordon said, pointing to the audience. The studio burst out laughing.

Craig Ferguson hosted the show for 10 years before Cordon took office in March 2015. Cordon has since has organized a “supreme late-night party” that includes a mix of celebrity guests, “intense” music performances, games and sketches, according to the show’s website. Cordon renewed the show, which airs this week at 12:30 p.m. ET, with segments such as “Carpool Karaoke,” “Drop the Mic,” “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” and “Crosswalk the Musical.”

In the “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” segment, Cordon sits with a celebrity and they take turns asking questions. Cordon, who describes himself as the “big unit” and is said to be the favorite comedian of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, reached new levels of popularity when he launched his Carpool Karaoke videos. About 15-minute clips show Cordon driving around while celebrities in the passenger seat sing, sometimes in their songs.

The host is known for getting involved and interviewing his guests when they hit a red light. Adele, Bruno Mars, Michelle Obama and Jennifer Lopez starred in the series.

Cordon, who has three children with his wife Julia Kerry, has also partnered in films, including Cats, Peter Rabbit and The Tour, for which he received his first Golden Globe nomination. He recently hosted HBO Max’s “Friends: The Reunion” and wrote and starred in the long-awaited Christmas special of 2019 on “Gavin & Stacey,” a show co-created by Corden with Welsh actress Ruth Jones.

For a moment on Friday morning’s show, Cordon left the comedy behind and revealed himself the difficult choice to leave.

“When I started this trip, it would always be just that,” Cordon said. “It would be a journey, an adventure. I have never seen it as my final destination. … I never want this show to prevail in any way. I always want to love doing it and I really think that in a year’s time it will be a good time to move on and see what else can be there. “

What’s next remains unclear, the comedian told Deadline. But his future projects could include writing, he added.

“There are still some other things I think I want to do,” Cordon told the entertainment site. “I would like to try and write. There are some [stories] I would like to say. I would like to see if I am capable of this. The fact that it’s horrible is the reason I do it. “

Back on the CBS set, Cordon is emotional about the next 200 episodes he will host, calling his choice to leave “the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.”

“But we’re not leaving today,” Cordon said. “We have another year and … we will come out with a bang.

“It’s until the next 12 months and it’s going to be a blast. I promise that. ”
