‘Massive pothole’ closes part of Winnipeg intersection

Call it the Salter Sinkhole or the father of all sinkholes.

A large crater has opened up in the middle of a busy intersection in north Winnipeg, forcing the closure of a section of Salter Street.

The northbound and southbound lanes are closed where Salter Street meets Inkster Boulevard in the St. John area of the city. Inkster was open Thursday afternoon, but the median lanes in both directions are expected to be closed sometime Thursday or Friday.

“Our crews investigated and the sink hole was likely caused by a sewer failure in the shaft located at the intersection of Salter Street and Inkster Boulevard,” said Lisa Marquardson, spokeswoman for Winnipeg’s Department of Water and Waste.

Repair work has begun and is expected to take up to a month, she said in an emailed statement.

Winnipeg police initially tweeted late Wednesday night that the entire intersection was closed due to a “huge pothole.”

Barricades have since been erected to allow traffic to flow on Inkster.
