The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has confirmed a total of 604 monkeypox cases in the country as of Wednesday, Trend reported, citing Xinhua.
The cases include 320 from Quebec, 230 from Ontario, 40 from British Columbia, 12 from Alberta and two from Saskatchewan.
The Canadian federal government said Wednesday it will fund support for community organizations to deal with monkeypox.
According to PHAC, provinces and territories review case data in their jurisdictions and those that meet the case definition will be reported to PHAC for inclusion in the national investigation.
The National Microbiology Laboratory performs diagnostic tests for the monkeypox virus. In addition, the lab is conducting whole-genome sequencing, enhanced fingerprint analysis, on Canadian monkeypox samples, PHAC said.
Monkeypox is a sylvatic zoonosis that can cause infections in humans, and the disease is usually found in forested parts of central and western Africa. It is caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the orthopoxvirus family, according to the World Health Organization.
