Google began accepting pre-orders for the Pixel 6a yesterday, with official sales scheduled to begin on July 28. The Pixel 6a was announced back in May and is an interesting departure from the “a” line, as it uses the same Tensor SoC as the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, while being cheaper than both.
If you’ve ever wanted to take a peek at the Pixel 6a, today’s your lucky day, as YouTube channel PBK Reviews has done just that, on video, for your viewing pleasure. This is a step-by-step teardown of the new phone, revealing all its innards.
It starts with a pretty bad surprise, which is that the device in question ships with the camera lens bezel and back plate scratched and scuffed. Luckily the screen was fine as it is protected by a piece of paper, but this is obviously a pretty serious quality control issue at the factory.
Anyway, the first step of disassembly is removing the screen, which reveals that the fingerprint sensor is attached to the display panel. The Pixel 6a has a large piece of graphite inside for heat transfer, and removing the battery is easier than other Pixels. It then boils down to removing the main board, with the USB-C port soldered onto it, making it difficult to repair. The good news for mid-range smartphone fans is that this one has a real proximity sensor. Be sure to watch the video above to find out all the details and aspects that led to the 7/10 repairability rating.
