CITY OF SOUTH FULTON – Police shot and killed a man while trying to carry out an order. It happened on Friday afternoon in the city of South Fulton.
Investigators say Chase McDermott was a member of the gang.
Tom Jones from Channel 2 talks to McDermott’s father, Harold McDermott, who said he still couldn’t believe his son was gone.
He also said he could not believe his son was armed and aimed his weapon at police. But police say Chase McDermott was armed and then officers opened fire.

“I’m shocked I don’t have a son,” said Harold McDermott.
He told Jones he was trying to cope after Atlanta police shot and killed his 22-year-old son at their home.
He said he was sitting on his deck shortly after on Chania Drive when several police officers surrounded his home around noon.
They wanted his son. He said he tried to come in and see if he was there.
“They waved me back, and then when I turned around, I heard two shots and they killed my son,” said Harold McDermott.
TRENDS:
Police say their runaway squad was looking for the younger McDermott and they were at home to carry out an order.
“He was wanted for a gang-related murder,” said Atlanta Deputy Chief of Police Charles Hampton.
Police said they saw Chase McDermott and entered the house.
“When they entered the residence, they met an armed fugitive,” Hampton said.
Hampton said a police officer opened fire. He did not say what provoked the shooting.

“I can’t even see him not pointing a gun at the police to be honest with you,” Harold McDermott said.
Harold McDermott said his son had recently surrendered to other charges he faced, and would do the same on Friday if detectives asked.
“They startled me, startled him and shot him,” said Harold McDermott.
The father said it was bad for his family.
“I’m traumatized by what I am,” said Harold McDermott.
The older McDermott said his family took his son’s gun after he was recently arrested and was told he could not have a gun, so he did not believe his son had a gun.
Police were adamant that Chase McDermott was armed.
