Man dead after police shooting in Nanaimo

A man has died after being shot by police on Saturday in Nanaimo, British Columbia

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which reviews all police actions resulting in death or serious injury, is investigating the shooting.

This is the 38th death investigated by the IIO this year.

RCMP said in a statement that officers were called Saturday afternoon to reports of a man and woman confronting each other near a vehicle parked in the middle of Haliburton Street, near Highview Terrace.

According to police, when they arrived around 2 p.m., the man allegedly pulled out a weapon. Police subsequently shot the man, who died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency responders.

Nanaimo RCMP say they have closed off the area indefinitely while the IIO investigates. They say the man and the woman knew each other. No one else was injured in the shooting.

It is not clear what kind of weapon the man was carrying and whether he threatened others. An RCMP spokesperson declined to provide those details when requested by CBC News.
