GALESBURG, Illinois – A deputy sheriff in western Illinois who puts spiked tape on the road was killed Friday morning when he was hit by a car driven by a man fleeing the authorities after he was allegedly spotted in a store with gun, officials said.
In a press release, Illinois state police said the Knox County deputy was hit shortly after 8 a.m. while putting up spikes to try to flatten the tires of a fleeing vehicle that was being chased in nearby Henry County by police Gailsberg employees. Officers, answering a call to 911 for a suspect with a gun at the Circle K store in Galesburg, chased the vehicle after the driver fled in an attempt to stop traffic.
Illinois state police said the man continued to drive on U.S. Highway 150 before the car crashed into the field. They said the man was arrested after a brief chase.
A 22-year-old man from Granite City was charged Friday with murder, illegal possession of a weapon by a criminal and fleeing and fleeing, state police said. He was held in Henry County Jail without bail.
The name of the deputy is not announced pending notification of relatives.
