Mike Layton will not seek re-election in the October election, he confirmed Wednesday, a move that means Toronto will be without Layton in office for the first time in decades.
Leighton, currently a city councilor for Rosedale University, has been in the post since 2010. His father, the late Jack Leighton, was a Toronto councilor in the 1980s before turning to federal politics and leading the Nova democratic party.
At City Hall, the younger Leighton was one of the council’s strongest voices on environmental issues and also championed projects like the Bloor Street bike lanes.
He is the latest progressive councilor to retire in the inner city. Count. Joe Cressey left municipal politics earlier this year and Coun. Christine Wong-Tam made the leap into provincial politics this June.
The Toronto election is scheduled for October 24.
