A hospital network in the GTA is mourning the loss of three doctors who died within days of each other last week.
“It is with deep sadness that Trillium Health Partners mourns the loss of three of our physicians who recently passed away,” spokesman Amit Shilton told CTV News Toronto in a statement Wednesday.
“Dr. Jakub Sawicki, Dr. Stephen McKenzie, and Dr. Lorne Segal were trusted colleagues who were committed to caring for their patients and the community.”
Trillium Health, which operates hospitals in Toronto and Mississauga, said rumors circulating on social media that the deaths were linked to the COVID-19 vaccine were false.
“The rumor that is being spread on social media is simply not true. Their passage is unrelated to the COVID-19 vaccine,” Shilton said.
On July 17, Dr. Lorne Segal, a 49-year-old otolaryngologist at Credit Valley Hospital, died after a “ridiculously unfair and difficult year-long battle with advanced lung cancer,” according to his obituary.
He was an “adored” husband of 22 years and a “devoted” father to 16, 14 and 9 year olds.
“He shared many interests with his children, including an uncanny level of automotive knowledge, a love of Air Jordans, a penchant for all things Marvel and indeed all movies, an impressive gaming background, fitness and super cheat, comic book and food knowledge” , his obituary says.
A day later, on July 18, Dr. Stephen McKenzie, a neurologist who joined Trillium Health nearly 40 years ago, died. He was one of the founders of the Department of Neurology and took a keen interest in medical education.
“Dr. McKenzie was a caring, kind and gentle man who truly enjoyed life,” his obituary said.
According to McKenzie’s office, he was “seriously ill” which led to his death and his office closed for good. The nature of his illness is not disclosed.
Dr. Jakub Sawicki completed his family medicine training at Credit Valley and became a member of Trillium Health’s surgical care team in 2014. A memorial notice issued July 21 said Sawicki developed a passion for pain medicine and -later became medical director of pain clinics in the region. His funeral took place the next day.
“Dr. Sawicki was a kind and pleasant man and will always be remembered with a smile on his face.
