Constable Neil Bruce Middle School’s local leadership group continues to train and plan for the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation in West Kelowna.

The students recently began a second phase of the program.

They canoed and learned navigational tools on Okanagan Lake. Later that week they learned the Okanagan song and put into action the drums they had built in September.

“The students’ dedication to the program is a tribute to their commitment to reconciliation efforts,” said Constable Rollie Williams of the West Kelowna RCMP Local Police Unit.

“These young leaders are positive role models in our community and it is a privilege to work with them.”

The students’ new skills will come together for a special national Truth and Reconciliation Day ceremony where students, members of the Westbank First Nation, West Kelowna RCMP and their guests will sing, row and drum in honor of Indigenous heritage.

The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation will be observed on September 30 in West Kelowna.
