A massive power outage affected most of Vernon Wednesday night – Vernon News

UPDATE: 9:25 p.m

Power has been restored to Vernon residents after a problem at a local substation knocked out power to more than 16,000 homes Wednesday night.

BC Hydro’s outage map shows the massive outage has been cleared and lights around Vernon are back on.

Doug Sherman, BC Hydro community relations manager, said the outage was caused by a problem at the Vernon substation that shut down some circuits.

UPDATE: 8:35 p.m

BC Hydro has not yet determined how long Vernon’s massive power outage will last.

About 7 p.m., more than 16,000 customers in the Vernon area were without power due to a problem at the Vernon substation.

“We don’t know the exact cause at this time … but it was an issue with some equipment at the substation and it knocked out several circuits that feed a number of customers, about 16,000 approximately in the Vernon area,” said Doug Sherman, BC Community Relations Manager Hydro.

Sherman says crews are currently at the substation working to fix the problem, but have not yet determined how long the outage could last.

A massive power outage left thousands of Vernon residents without power Wednesday night.

BC Hydro’s outage map shows power went out to thousands of homes in the city around 7 p.m.

The cause of the outage is currently “under investigation” and crews are on the way.

The outage affected more than 16,000 homes, as far north as Swan Lake, as far west as Beachcomber Bay and as far east as Lavington.
