Trillium Health Partners has spoken out against widespread social media posts claiming three Mississauga doctors died from the COVID-19 vaccine.
Trillium Health Partners doctors Dr. Jakub Sawicki, Dr. Steven McKenzie, and Dr. Lorne Segal died in July, and several different publications, some even in different languages, suggested that the doctors died from a booster shot.
“Three doctors die in four days, shortly after hospital begins injecting staff with fourth Covid vaccines,” reads the Tweet.
“Three doctors at Trillium Health in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada did it in a 3-day period just days after getting their fourth Covid vaccine,” says another.
But the posts are simply wrong, says Amit Shilton, a spokesman for Trillium Health Partners.
“It is with deep sadness that Trillium Health Partners mourns the loss of three of our physicians who recently passed away,” Trillium said in a statement. “Dr. Jakub Sawicki, Dr. Stephen McKenzie, and Dr. Lorne Segal were trusted colleagues who were committed to caring for their patients and the community.”
“The rumor circulating on social media is simply not true,” the statement continued. “Their passing is not related to the COVID-19 vaccine.”
Dr. Lorne Segal died July 17 after a “tenacious year-long battle with advanced lung cancer,” according to his online obituary.
Dr. Jakub Sawicki joined the surgical care team at Trillium in 2014.
“Dr. Sawicki was a kind and pleasant man and will always be remembered for having
a smile on his face. He was an excellent doctor and his patients opened up to his warmth
and positivity,” reads a note from Trillium.
His funeral took place on July 22.
Dr. Stephen McKenzie joined Trillium in 1983 as a neurologist at Mississauga Hospital.
“Dr. McKenzie was a caring, kind and gentle man who truly enjoyed life,” his obituary said.
He died on July 18.
No further information is available about the cause of death for Dr. McKenzie or Dr. Sawicki, but the families of the three doctors are asking for privacy at this difficult time, Shilton said.
