Quebec’s Office of Independent Investigations (BEI) launched an investigation after a 48-year-old man — a serving RCMP officer — was fatally shot early Wednesday by police in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Montérégie.

The shooting happened while police were investigating a call that led to the discovery of a woman and a teenager critically injured.

According to BEI, police received a 911 call at 2:05 a.m. from a man who said he had committed an unpardonable act.

Officers who arrived at the caller’s residence on Biat St. said they were confronted by a man armed with a knife. In the ensuing confrontation, the officers opened fire, hitting the man at least once. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

RCMP spokeswoman Tasha Adams confirmed that a federal officer died in the incident, but did not confirm his identity.

In the apartment, the police found a woman and a teenager with serious injuries. They were immediately taken to hospital.

The BEI, which is called in whenever a death or serious injury occurs during a police operation in Quebec, has assigned six investigators to the case. The Sûreté du Québec is conducting a parallel investigation into the attacks on the woman and the teenager, as well as providing technical support to the BEI probe.
