Police are warning of an attempted child abduction in central Newfoundland

Police are investigating an attempted child abduction in central Newfoundland.

Around 7:30 p.m. Friday in Fredericton, police received a report of a child being approached by a man in a white van.

The man asked the child to get into the vehicle before getting out of the van and trying to convince the child to get inside.

The child rode off on a pedal bike and hid in a wooded area until they felt safe to return home.

The man is described as short with a large belly and a long beard. He wore a black hat.

The van is described as white, with no writing or branding, two doors at the back with two windows.

Police searched for the vehicle but were unable to locate it.

The investigation continues.
