Genshin Impact Sumeru teaser reveals Alhaitham, Dehya, Cyno and more

Genshin Impact developer Hoyoverse released a preview video that revealed new information about the upcoming Sumeru region on Thursday. There’s a lot crammed into the roughly three-minute video, but highlights include new Sumeru lore, six character teases, and more information on enemies we’ll encounter in his lands.

The preview video, titled “Prelude to Wisdom,” is part of an ongoing series showing players what to expect during their travels in Sumeru. The video begins by defining the main guiding principle of the region: knowledge. The developers emphasize the central role of researchers in the country and how highly rational its people are. We also hear that the people of Sumeru are incapable of dreaming and that they wear strange headphones that may have something to do with this phenomenon.

However, if we’re talking lore, then here’s what you need to know: The biggest tidbits to come out of the preview are the character reveals, of which there are plenty.

Here’s everyone we saw:

  • We got another look at explorer and forest ranger Tignari.
  • Alhaitham is a piece that we will encounter in a port city. He comes from Haravatat to the Academy, which functions as a higher university and governing body.
  • Dehya, who the developers describe as “Desertfolk”, is a cat-eared mercenary from the Hermitage.
  • There is the horned dancer Nilu, who defied Sumeru’s values by embracing the arts.
  • We saw General Mahamatra, Kino sitting dramatically in the desert, but we didn’t get any more information about him yet.
  • Nahida is a “mysterious girl” whose design reassembles a fairy. She is rumored to be the new Archon of Dendro. (Which is a game-specific term for the entity that serves as the region’s god.)

Sumeru includes both lush forests and barren deserts. As such, we will encounter a wide variety of enemies, including a common enemy, the Hermits. They are a group of mercenaries who come from an ancient civilization in the desert and will appear as common enemies like Nobushi in Inazuma. The video also showed common fauna of the region, such as a mossy version of the wild boars found in other regions, new species of mushrooms, a giant ostrich-like plant bird, and leopards.

Apparently the earth hides some secrets in the sand too. There are robot-like devices that we will fight with in the desert temples and mutated beasts. The developers are hinting at some unknown “suspension agent” being used by the desert people in crisis, but we’ll have to wait to find out what that means.

Sumeru will be added to Genshin Impact as part of the game’s big 3.0 update. In addition to the information shared here, the region will introduce a new grass-inspired item called Dendro. This is a huge update that will release a lot of the content shown over the course of several months. You can read everything you need to know about it with our Genshin Impact Update 3.0 explainer.
