An evacuation order has been issued for a wildfire southwest of Penticton, British Columbia

Residents of 21 properties near a wildfire southwest of Penticton, British Columbia have been ordered to evacuate.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen issued the order Friday night around 9:30 p.m.

It is in effect for residents of Green Mountain Road, near Ford Lake.

The district says 21 properties are under the evacuation order, which is being monitored by the RCMP.

“An evacuation order has been issued … to protect the health, safety or welfare of an individual or to limit damage to property,” the county’s order said.

The Keremeos Creek fire, which started earlier on Friday, was already one square kilometer in size as of 10 p.m.

The cause of this wildfire is currently under investigation, according to the British Columbia Wildfire Service.

The fire is being fought by 10 personnel from the provincial agency, including two helicopters. More firefighters are on the way, the province said Friday evening.

“This wildfire is located in terrain that is currently unusable for air tanker and heavy machinery support,” the agency added.
