An employee is recovering in hospital after suffering cardiac arrest from smoke inhalation during a fire in the laundry room of the National Arts Center kitchen.
Firefighters and paramedics responded to a fire call at the NAC on Friday evening.
“A fire broke out in a linen dryer located in the NAC kitchen laundry room,” said NAC spokeswoman Annabelle Cloutier. “The fire has been extinguished and has not spread further.
A spokesperson for the Ottawa Paramedic Service says a man went into cardiac arrest after smoke inhalation.
Firefighters on the scene used an automated external defibrillator to treat the patient before paramedics arrived on the scene, and paramedics then used a cyanide kit to reverse the effects of the smoke.
“Our thoughts are with our injured colleague who is recovering and should be released soon as his health has really improved,” Cloutier said.
The National Arts Center says there was no disruption to events from Friday night’s performances and all performances will continue as scheduled this weekend.
