The City of Toronto recently decided to open the market for longer hours as part of a year-long pilot project following a review of the hours of operation that included public feedback and an assessment of how “improvements to operations can better serve Torontonians and visitors to the town.”

“The revised opening hours will make the market more accessible, with opening hours that meet the changing needs and preferences of visitors. The changes include opening the market on Sundays and later morning opening and later evening closing on weekdays,” they said in a statement.

“As Toronto’s economy recovers, the market is now in a position to resume extended hours.”

The city said the outcome of this pilot project will “inform a more permanent operational schedule for the remainder of 2023 and beyond.”

Traders were notified three months in advance of these changes. Management has and will continue to work with traders to help them find the staff needed to “implement the new opening hours sufficiently operationally”.

In March 2020, St. Lawrence Market was in the process of launching a pilot project to expand its hours, but that initiative was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the market’s opening hours were changed and actually reduced to comply with the health and safety measures of COVID-19.

“In 2020, we turned around, as COVID-19 impacted previous launch plans, we are now moving forward with this exciting pilot. The new hours pilot modernizes the market’s operations and ensures that more people – residents and visitors to our city – have the opportunity to experience this incredible, historic Toronto destination,” Mayor John Tory said in a release.

“It’s very exciting that Market St. Lawrence Market will relaunch extended hours. I want to thank the many businesses that make the market such a special place.”
