NEW DELHI: The government is yet to release an official statement as to why BGMI has been banned in India, but the fact that it has forced Google and Apple to remove the BGMI game from their respective app stores through an order citing Section 69A of the IT Act means that the government considers the BGMI game about some form of cyber threat.
According to an earlier report by News18, a senior government official said that the BGMI app was found to be communicating with servers directly or indirectly located in China. “The analysis also showed that this app has malicious code and also acquires multiple critical permissions that can be abused to compromise user data for camera/microphone surveillance, location tracking and malicious network activities,” a senior government official said to News18 on condition of anonymity.
It cannot be denied that BGMI will have to comply with local laws to do business in India, but interestingly, Krafton somewhere already knew that they would soon face this problem. This may be the reason why the BGMI game is released as an APK file on the official BGMI website. If you think you will be able to download the APK file now (after the ban), then it’s a bit late as Krafton has taken it down. However, you can get it from source APK websites.
But the thing is, if you’re a fan of BGMI, chances are you’ve already downloaded the game on your smartphone and can still play it whenever you want.
Having said that, the good news is that Krafton is not giving up its hopes and wants to stay in the Indian market after following the local laws. To recall when PUBG Mobile was banned in India in 2020, it took Krafton just 10 months to re-enter the Indian gaming market with BGMI. Even this time, Krafton continues to assure gamers in India. In its official statement, Krafton said: “We kindly ask you to wait to hear from us. We will keep you posted for further updates. We look forward to strengthening our partnerships and collectively fostering the gaming ecosystem in India.”
Here is Krafton’s full statement on the BGMI ban in India: “We are committed to the Indian market and positive about the opportunities in the country. At KRAFTON, Inc. The security and privacy of our user data are of the utmost importance to use. We have always complied with and will continue to comply with all laws and regulations in India, including data protection laws and regulations.
Thank you for all the love and support you have shown us during our journey here and we hope to continue to communicate in the future. There might be questions in your mind regarding the current situation surrounding the most loved game in the country – BGMI. Accordingly, we have worked hard to communicate our sincerity to the relevant authorities and resolve the issues.
