St. Catharines roads reopen as police arrest gunman after lengthy standoff

Niagara Regional Police say they have arrested a man for assault after a 12-hour standoff that began Sunday afternoon.

Police said uniformed officers of the St. Catharines/Thorold responded to an armed person call around 3:23 p.m. Sunday.

Officers responded to a building in the area of ​​Geneva Street and Welland Avenue in St. Catharines. The initial investigation revealed that the manager had been threatened by a man with a knife.

The man was on the roof of a building, armed with a knife. Police said the man refused to drop the weapon and officers from the NRPS Emergency Response Unit and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene.

Police said the man was restrained on the roof and officers were able to gain access to the roof with the help of the St. Catharines Fire Department and their ladder trucks.

After a lengthy standoff, police said the suspect was arrested at 3:15 a.m. Monday.

Arrested and charged with one count of assault with a weapon is Rory Docherty, 28, of St. Catharines.

Doherty was transported to a local hospital for medical care and remains hospitalized. Police said he will be released on a Form 10 Undertaking with a future court date.

Geneva Street between North Street and Welland Avenue were closed Sunday as negotiations continued.
