A tornado was confirmed near Coronation, Alta., Sunday night

Environment Canada confirmed there was a tornado on Sunday around 5:10 p.m. five kilometers southwest of Coronation, Alta.

The National Weather Service has given the tornado a preliminary EF0 rating.

Coronation is about 315 kilometers southeast of Edmonton.

Although there were multiple reports and photos of the tornado, there were no reports of damage “at this time,” the agency said Monday morning.

It was a busy evening for some people in central Alberta as tornado warnings were issued by Environment Canada.

The city of Coronation was under a tornado warning for about an hour as rain, hail and strong winds battered the community.

Residents also saw what appeared to be a funnel cloud touching down around 5:15 p.m

Warnings were also issued for Flagstaff County (around 4 p.m.) and Paint County (near Castor). Both warnings were in effect for about an hour.

Later Sunday, at about 9:45 p.m., another tornado warning was issued for Clearwater County, west of Red Deer, and was in effect for about half an hour.

The storm made its way to the southeast.

According to the Alberta Emergency Alert website, the critical alert was triggered by a “rotating severe thunderstorm possibly producing a tornado.”

The agency said the storm was “15 kilometers east of Castor, moving southeast at 40 km/h”.

Golf ball-sized hail was reported, the AEA said.

Environment Canada says hot conditions in southern Alberta have broken some temperature records.

On July 31, 2022, the following areas recorded maximum daily temperature records:

Bow Valley Area (Provincial Park) (Bow Valley) New record of 33.7 C. Record of 32.2 C set in 1973. Records in this area have been kept since 1928.

Milk River area (Milk River) New record of 35.1 C. Record of 34.5 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1994.

Waterton Park area (Waterton Park Gate) New record of 32.5C Cold record of 31.8C set in 2015 Records in this area have been held since 1976.
