The Batgirl movie has been canceled due to changes in the future of the DCEU

In a surprising turn of events, Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to cancel the release of the planned Batgirl movie, according to a recent report from The Wrap.

The report mentions that Warner Bros. Discovery no longer plans to release the film, which had already wrapped production earlier this year and appeared to be nearly complete, either on HBO Max or in theaters. Earlier this year, reports hinted at the possibility of the film moving from theaters to streaming only, but it appears that Warner Bros. Discovery have instead chosen to remove it entirely.

News of the film’s cancellation also hints at a potential reason behind it, with the report noting that the new heads of Warner Bros. Discovery, led by CEO David Zaslav, is looking to make DC movies more of a big theatrical event for the movie industry, and Batgirl doesn’t fit that mold. The film was not originally intended as a theatrical release and had a much smaller budget than most comic book blockbusters.

Batgirl was set to star Leslie Grace (In the Heights) as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon. The character was first seen in the 1967 Batman series with the late Yvonne Craig as Barbara. Her first comic book appearance was in Detective Comics #357 by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

The news comes amid a tumultuous time for the DCEU, as reports surfaced earlier this year suggesting that Warner Bros. Discovery wants to revisit the current state of the DCEU. With just five movies — Black Adam, Shazam! Wrath of the Gods, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Flash and the Blue Beetle — all with concrete release dates at the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what the future holds for the world of DC Films.
