Toronto police say one man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a shooting at a memorial service in Scarborough on Tuesday night.
Police said the incident happened around 9 p.m. at a family home in the area of Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East, where people have gathered to pay their respects to a loved one killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.
Officers said they found a man with a gunshot wound to the leg at the scene.
The medics took the man to trauma center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
After the shooting, many people stayed to light candles, chant and pay their respects to their friend.
“Most of these people continued the vigil for their friend,” Inspector Jeff Bangield told CP24. “There were a number of witnesses who were here. Everyone has been very cooperative by providing us with information about the investigation and helping us determine who the suspect is.
Witnesses said the suspect left on foot after the shooting. It is unclear if the suspect attended the vigil before the shooting.
“It is unknown if the suspects were known to the people here at the party, but given the closeness and intimacy of the event, I would expect that these individuals did know each other,” Banghild said.
No suspect description is available at this time, but Banglid said police encourage anyone with information to come forward.
“We have no information on what this person looks like. But again, we are in the preliminary stages of our investigation,” he said. “And while we do have people who have come forward and provided us with information, we certainly encourage anyone who saw this event to contact us at the Toronto Police Service or Crimestoppers.”
