A tornado EF-0 with a peak wind speed of 75 miles per hour landed in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook on Saturday when strong thunderstorms moved into the region, according to the National Weather Service.
In a tweet, NWS said it confirmed a brief tornado based on information from local government officials, weather observers and radar data.
The tornado is classified as EF-0, the lowest level in the six-point Enhanced Fujita scale. Traveling about 2.9 miles with a maximum width of 60 yards, he broke tree branches, uprooted trees and tore off the roof of the golf course bathroom.
The tornado initially landed near the Hilton Hotel and Willow Crest Golf Club before ending in Oak Brook Central Park approximately three minutes later, according to the NWS.
Heavy weather also hit the Rockford area, where a second short tornado occurred, traveling approximately half a mile in one minute. Also classified as EF-0, it brought winds of 80 miles per hour and caused the uprooting of several trees.
NWS warns that the information provided late on Saturday is only preliminary and is subject to change pending a final review of events and the release of storm data.
