Hours before it took place on Sunday, organizers announced the cancellation of the Montreal parade.

“The lack of sufficient personnel to ensure security along the route has forced the organizers to cancel the event in agreement with the Montreal Police Department,” Montreal Pride said in a statement on Facebook.

The parade was to pass east along Boulevard René-Lévesque, from Rue Metcalfe to Rue Alexandre deSève.

Thousands of attendees were expected.

Other events planned to mark the final day of Pride in Montreal, including a closing show on the esplanade in front of the Olympic Stadium, will go ahead as planned.

The last-minute announcement of the parade’s cancellation drew criticism on social media.

“Understaffing? TODAY organization realized?” asked one commenter on Twitter, noting that organizers never posted about needing more volunteers in the months leading up to Pride.

“Lack of organization and mismanagement which is mind boggling,” wrote another Twitter user.

The Montreal Pride Parade was canceled due to the pandemic in 2020. A reduced Pride Parade was held in 2021, with no floats or vehicles.
