Calgary firefighters were called to a two-alarm fire in a northeast community Sunday and officials say two homes were damaged.
The Calgary Fire Department was called to the scene on Martin Crossing Way NE at approximately 10:30 a.m. for reports of a fire.
Officials say when firefighters went to the scene, it was clear they needed more equipment to help.
“A second alarm was called to provide adequate resources due to the amount of smoke and fire visible from a considerable distance,” CFD said in a release.
“The first apparatus on scene reported an active fire involving two separate single-family residences. On arrival, immediate efforts were made to bring the fire under control with an aggressive external fire attack progressing to an internal fire attack to ensure they were able to get to the source of the fire in both homes.”
Druba Niraula lives across the street and said he was asleep when the fire broke out.
“One of my daughters called me and said, ‘Dad, dad, there’s a fire!'” I was about to run away with my important documents, he told CTV News.
Niraula and his family moved to the neighborhood a few months ago.
He said he feared for the safety of his three children and his wife.
“It was on fire, I thought it was going to get to my house because it was so close,” he said.
Esperancel Fanny also lives in the neighborhood and said the situation has left her feeling on edge.
“I felt a little bit scared and I was worried about the people that live in these houses and I wanted to make sure that they were safe and sound,” she said.
Houses sustained significant damage, but no one appears to have been injured.
Eleven adults and two children, residents of the two homes, have been evicted for the time being.
Niraula didn’t know her neighbors before, but decided to invite them in to offer some help in a difficult situation.
“Whatever kind of help they want to get from me, I’m always ready to help them,” he said.
An investigation is underway into the cause. Anyone with photos or videos of this fire prior to the fire department’s arrival please email them to piofire@calgary.ca.
