Wolfe Island Ferry continues to experience significant staffing difficulties this summer, narrowly avoiding the cancellation of services on Sunday 7 August 2022 due to a shortage of qualified staff.
“Due to an unexpected staff shortage, the ferry will be out of service from 08:00 on Sunday 7 August and will resume at 19:00. The ferry will be available at short notice to respond to emergency services only. Staffing efforts are ongoing and we appreciate your patience,” the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) initially announced shortly after midnight Sunday morning.
About eight hours later, however, the MTO announced that a qualified employee had been secured and that Sunday ferry service would still be provided, albeit altered throughout the morning. “We found a qualified crew member. The ferry will operate today but off schedule this morning,” the service said.
Over 1,000 people live on Wolfe Island and hundreds more also depend on the ferry service.
As previously reported, the MTO service had ongoing staffing issues over the summer, but few answers as to the cause or possible solutions were received from the ministry, despite numerous inquiries from Kingstonist as well as municipal officials.
