Government officials are asking cabin owners in central Newfoundland to stay off forest roads to check on their properties as officials continue to monitor and deal with wildfires in the region.
The state of emergency imposed in the central and Conaigre Peninsula areas was officially lifted from midnight last night.
Forestry Minister Derrick Bragg says while conditions have improved, the smoldering fires could reignite at any time.
Bragg says forest roads in the area should remain open for ground crews, but they are asking residents and property owners not to enter the area.
He says it was easier to monitor the forest roads when the Bay d’Espoir highway was closed, but now that the main highway has reopened, there are police and others monitoring the access points to make sure , that people “stay away”.
