A fire destroyed the Senator Alan Bird Memorial Center on Friday, one of the main meeting places of the Grand Council of Prince Albert (PAGC).
Grand Chief Brian Hardlot said the PAGC was “heartbroken” after the loss of such an important building and main center.
“Our hearts are broken to lose one of the most iconic buildings of Prince Albert’s Grand Council. “The building is named after our late elder and decorated veteran Senator Alan Bird of the Montreal Cree Lake Nation,” Hardlot said in a statement. “He had a reputation as the main gathering place for many of our public events. But it was more than a meeting place. It is also the home of our government for our 12-nation nations and has been a place where we have honored many of our leaders over the years.
Deputy Chief Joseph Tzani said the center was used just Thursday to donate Easter baskets to those in need.
