We are trying to help a mother and her two-year-old child under the sponsorship scheme in Ukraine for 37 days (Priti Patel is facing a lawsuit from Ukrainians left behind with visas, May 2). The mother is still waiting for a visa, but the child has received one. No reason was given as to why the mother did not receive a travel visa with her child. We can’t think of a more reckless and stupid way to process applications.
There are mothers with children who have to live in underground bunkers in Ukraine, without food and fresh water, without electricity, desperately trying to keep their children safe. If you are in this situation and your child receives a visa, are you trying to take him to a safe place or are you waiting for your visa, knowing that you can both be killed every day?
The mother and child we are trying to help are friends. Their home was damaged and they sought refuge. Delaying visas increases their stress and anxiety. The young boy has special needs, so he needs specialized support. His condition is not helped by the trauma he has suffered since the war.
How can the Ministry of the Interior be crazy enough to issue a two-year permit to travel alone? David and Pamela Hopcroft Briarfield, Lancashire
