The moment Ronnie O’Sullivan won his record seventh World Cup title was watched by an incredible 4.5 million people on BBC Two.
It was the highest audience of any television program on Monday night, including Coronation Street, which was on ITV1 at the same time.
BBC bosses are thought to be pleased with the figures, with the last session of the Crucible final attracting an average of 3.1 million viewers. BBC iPlayer also had 921,000 requests for live broadcasts for the match between O’Sullivan and Judd Trump all Monday.

The 4.5m peak is 100,000 more than the number that aired on Channel 4 for the final round of last year’s dramatic Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when Max Verstappen led Louis Hamilton to the Formula One title. It also coincided with the peak Channel 4 audience when England won the 2019 Cricket World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord’s.
Both F1 and cricket were also shown live on Sky Sports in those days, but BBC snooker coverage had competition from Eurosport.
In 1985, a record 18.5 million remained awake after midnight to watch Dennis Taylor beat Steve Davis in the famous black ball final.
BBC iPlayer also had 921,000 live broadcasts of O’Sullivan’s victory over Judd Trump
