“The fact is that he did not try to play the system that many police officers have made over the years,” Mr Sturman told QC in court.

Cousins has not yet provided police or Miss Everard’s family with the full account of what happened the night he abducted and killed her.

Special hearing in the Court of Appeal

The evidence was heard as part of a unique hearing in the Court of Appeals, during which judges reviewed the sentences of five murderers. When handed down, the sentence could set a new precedent for how and when judges can issue life sentences.

Tom Little QC, representing the Attorney General, told the court that in all cases, either a life sentence was imposed or a life sentence that was contested or not, and the Attorney General is looking for one.

Lawyers for Emma Tustin and Thomas Hughes, who abused Arthur during the first blockade in June 2020, also demanded a reduction in their sentences.
