Ben Simmons Injury Update: The Nets star will undergo back surgery; expected recovery time 3-4 months, according to the report

The Brooklyn Nets exchanged Ben Simmons in the hope that he would help them get closer to winning the championship. Now they just hope he can really get on the court at some point. After it looked like Simmons had to return to Game 4 of Brooklyn’s first round against Boston, which would be his debut at the Nets and the season, he was surprisingly rejected after informing team officials that the disc herniation in his back turned to pain after a workout.

Unfortunately, Simmons’ herniated disc will now require surgery – a microdiscectomy procedure to be specific – to relieve disc pain, the Nets said Wednesday.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski says Simmons is expected to need three to four months to recover and must return “long before training camp”, but at this point we should probably all be on hold and seeing. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Simmons told the Nets that “there is a mental block for him, dating back in part to last summer’s postseason, which creates stress that can serve as a trigger for back problems.”

So it’s not just a physical situation.

Simmons “added that he really wants to play basketball and play for the Nets, as he is working on decisions regarding his well-being,” according to Charania. Obviously Simmons is a man in the first place. He is struggling mentally and needs and needs to be given the time to work it out. I hope he finds a way to do it.

Then Simmons is a basketball player with a bad back. Basketball player for whom the Nets exchanged James Harden. It’s fair to wonder if the Nets knew the full extent of Simmons’ back problem when they made the deal, but now it’s water under the bridge. Moving forward, the Nets hope Simmons will return his mental and physical being in time for a fresh start next season.
