A dramatic video captures the moment when an Australian weather forecaster stopped his live report on the beach and rushed into the water to save a 10-year-old boy who is struggling to stay afloat.
Paul Burt was doing a live broadcast for 7NEWS on the sand at Surfers Paradise on Thursday night when he noticed that the boy was in trouble after being pulled from a riptide, according to the publication.
The quick-witted journalist dropped his microphone and set off, jumping into the stormy water to help passersby pull the child ashore.
After rescuing the boy, part of a Pakistani family, Burt returned to his duties.
“There was a 10-year-old boy … who was pulled into this cruel gutter and, of course, into this rupture,” the wet reporter said on air, referring to a section of deeper water coming out of the sand.
Bert interrupted his broadcast and jumped into the water to save the boy.
“Because of its light weight, it managed to stay afloat and enter the south side of the gutter. About four or five of us jumped in and actually pulled him back to the beach, “Burt said.
“He lives, he breathes, he is conscious, he speaks. Here the ambulance does everything possible to keep him alert. There is no doubt that he would drink a lot of water, “he added.
Bert reminded viewers that ocean gutters may look innocent, but they can be deadly to inexperienced swimmers.
Other rescuers helped the boy.
“These gutters here are very, very dangerous,” he said. “We’ve had half a dozen Gold Coast rescues here this week.”
