Series 20 is quickly becoming the year of shock exits – and of voters strongly disagreeing with the strict judges. Just two weeks after the surprise elimination of Richie Anderson, who ended up in the dance-off with Fleur East, we saw a similar result on Sunday night: two more mid-table celebs landed in the dance-off, and Jade Adams lost to the usually high-scoring Molly Rainford.
Once again Tony Adams, who was at the bottom of the table, was saved by the public vote, as were James Bye, Kim Marsh and Ellie Taylor, who finished lower than Rainford. But then the whole show was thrown into confusion thanks to the BBC 100 theme preempting the actual ballroom dancing – both Adams and especially Rainford falling prey to this. You could hardly blame viewers for not wanting to vote for their messed up numbers.
Another shock dance
The judges were clearly annoyed by the result – Shirley Ballas called Adams “one of our strongest performers” – but in the end they had a pretty easy choice. Although no one was exactly enthusiastic about Rainford Couple’s Choice’s adolescent street dance to the useless Grange Hill theme, she was clearly the more skilled player. Addams’ Charleston to Victoria Wood’s The Ballad of Barry and Freda (Let’s Do It) was notable mostly for the matching Wood wigs she and partner Karen Hauer wore rather than the actual routine.
After the dance, Craig Revel Horwood said that these were two very different dances, but based on technical ability alone, he saved Rainford. Mozi Mabuse commented that both performances were brilliant and better than Saturday night, but agreed: Rainford should stay.
