BC Ferries doubles its fuel surcharge from June 1, citing rising fuel costs.
The additional fee will increase from one percent to 2.5 percent, the ferry operator announced on Monday.
It says the surcharge will add 45 cents to the fare for an adult and $ 2 for a vehicle and driver traveling on routes between the Vancouver subway and Vancouver Island; and 25 cents for an adult fare and $ 1.05 for a vehicle and driver on a number of routes between the islands.
“We certainly don’t like to add fuel tax,” BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall told BC Today presenter Michelle Elliott.
“We know that no one likes to pay more for any of their goods, but we are in a situation where we have to introduce a higher fuel tax in the future because we are paying higher fuel prices.”
The company said it has used a system of discounts and surcharges on fuel for the past 18 years to manage ups and downs in fuel prices. When fuel prices are low, the savings are passed on to customers and vice versa, when prices rise, an additional fee is added, it said.
From June 1, the 2.5 percent fuel tax will be applied on three routes – Port Hardy-Prince Rupert, Prince Rupert-Haida Guyay and Port Hardy-Central Coast – where there is currently no additional charge.
