You’ve played games, watched movies, and now Netflix presents you with a whole new version of Resident Evil, unlike everyone you’ve seen before. The first teaser trailer for the mysterious, long-awaited show has just been released and io9 talks to showrunner Andrew Dub about it all.

The eight-episode season debuted on July 14 and follows a woman named Jade (Ella Balinska), who struggles to survive in a world overrun by deadly zombies, creatures and all sorts of evil. It’s 2036, but 14 years earlier, she, her sister and her father, Albert Wesker (Lance Reddick), were at zero in a place called New Raccoon City when the world was essentially over. Told both in the past and in the future at the same time, take a look at the parallel carnage that is happening in the new turn of the Capcom video game franchise. Then read more from the showrunner below about what to expect from the show.

So what exactly is going on here? Well, io9 was among a group of journalists who talked to showrunner Andrew Dub earlier this week about the show, and he broke it all. First, where does this show fit into the overall history of Resident Evil? These are basically two sequels to every game that is there, one in 2022 and one in 2036.

“The games are prehistory,” said Dub. “So everything that happened in the games happened in this world in the timeline in which it happened. So if anything happened in a game released in 1998, such as the destruction of Raccoon City, in this world, it happened in 1998.

So if the games are canon (up to and including the latest game, Village, which Dub says doesn’t play a role here – but in his mind it happens far away, almost simultaneously with this story), but what about the movies ? Dub says the show occasionally borrows from the Paul W. S. Anderson saga, but his vision for Resident Evil is more of showing fans’ times during a zombie apocalypse we don’t usually see.

“It simply came to our notice then [in zombie movies] are the days, the weeks and even the months after that, “he said. “But what we haven’t seen much of is the beginning, because, you know, the movie usually starts when the zombies appear, right?” It doesn’t really start before that. And then we didn’t see what the world would look like when it came to terms with what had happened. Humanity is adaptable and we adapt to many things. We are adapting to COVID literally right now. We will adapt to a zombie epidemic. It may not be beautiful and it doesn’t look like Los Angeles 2023, but we will.

However, these as Resident Evil are not just zombies. There are many deadly creatures, some of which are new and others that fans can instantly recognize in the trailer. However, Dabb didn’t want to do the show just for Easter eggs and winks at hardcore fans. He wanted a show that was true to the games, but also unique. In fact, he cites a very famous example of what he is going for.

“[Fans] they want something that feels like a natural continuation of something they already like. And I would say that the Marvel universe is doing very well, “said Dub. “Most of them [Marvel] the films do not adapt a specific comic. They take loans here and there and build something new. To a large extent, we are approaching this. The games are canonical and I’m sure we make mistakes, but we have not knowingly violated any rules of the game. But at the same time, this is not a direct adaptation of the games. “

However, if you are a fan of the games, you may have a question at this point. Resident Evil follows the family of Albert Wesker, Reddick’s character, who died spectacularly at the end of Resident Evil 5 in 2009. Dub knows this may still make no sense.

“We are very aware that Albert Wesker was blown up by a rocket volcano,” he said. “There is a very good reason for Wesker to return, and it doesn’t come down to the fact that he was wearing lava- and rocket-resistant clothing. So we are very aware of that. It will be considered. “

However, not everything will be resolved. When asked if this eight-episode season was a complete story, he said it was about these characters, but not about the overall plot. The hope is to do more in the future, although this is a solution for Netflix in the future. For now, Dub is just hoping that people who see this teaser will see that it has a new, fresh, but also true look at the favorite franchise. Something that fans new and old will respond to.

“[Resident Evil] it’s not, as I’ve seen online, Zombie Riverdale. It’s a Resident Evil show, “he said. “He has blood, courage, blood, monsters, secrets and betrayals and all that. And I hope people really respond to that. “

Resident Evil debuted on July 14 on Netflix and if you want to see more, we are told that there may be an Easter egg in this trailer for fans to find …
