Toronto mosque shooting: Ottawa police increase patrols

Ottawa police said they were in contact with local imams in the city after a shooting in front of a mosque in Scarborough early Saturday morning.

The shooting took place around 1 am, after midnight prayer for Ramadan. Toronto police say five people were shot dead in apparently random car shootings. None of the injuries to the victims are considered life-threatening.

In a tweet on Sunday, the Ottawa Police Department said it was monitoring the investigation and that patrols around religious institutions had increased.

Toronto police said on Saturday that it was too early to determine the motive, but the Hate Crimes Unit was involved.

We continue to monitor the investigation into the shooting of a mosque in Toronto. At the local level, we contacted local imams and increased patrols and police presence near religious institutions such as mosques. #ottawa @DRRmatters
