A woman has died from injuries sustained in a crash at a concert in Brix | London

A woman has died after being injured in an apparent crowd crush at a concert in Brixton, south London, on Thursday.

Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, was one of three seriously injured after fans tried to get in without tickets to a show by Nigerian artiste Asake at the south London venue on Thursday.

The Metropolitan Police said Ikumelo, from Newham, east London, died in hospital on Saturday, while two other women, aged 21 and 23, remained in a critical condition.

An autopsy will be performed on Sunday.

Chief Constable Colin Wingrove, police commander for Lambeth and Southwark, said: “This is still a rapidly developing and evolving picture and we are working to establish the events leading up to the incident.

“We are also aware of a huge amount of footage on social media and this will of course be looked at as part of the investigation, along with footage from police body-worn cameras.”

The Met launched an investigation on Friday into what it said was an “extremely worrying” incident.

Police found a number of people with “injuries believed to be caused by crushing” after being called to the scene at around 9.35pm on Thursday.

Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, was recently nominated for BBC Radio 1’s Sound of the Year 2023 award for UK Breakthrough Artists.

He said in a statement on Instagram: “My heart goes out to those who were injured last night and caused any form of discomfort. I pray you get better as soon as possible. I am also in the process of reaching out to individuals.

“I still do not have the full information from the hall management themselves as to what led to the disruption at the entrance to Brixton Academy, but we are grateful that everything was peaceful in the end.

“To my people who enjoyed the start of my performance, I’m sorry it was interrupted. Thank you for your incredible love, London. I love you too much! I look forward to seeing you again soon!”

Before the concert, he had posted on Twitter a request to fans not to come to the venue unless they had a valid ticket.

The gig was the third of three sold-out dates at the 4,921-capacity venue and completed a run of UK dates.
