Two men were killed and two others remained in critical condition after a boat capsized on Long Island Sound on Sunday, officials said.
Emergency services received a call from a distressed boat near Shepan Point in Stamford, Connecticut, around 10:30 a.m. Easter morning, a statement from the Stamford Fire Department said.
Two of the men pulled out of the water are unconscious and unresponsive, officials said. Two others were semi-responsive.
A fire boat transported two of the men to an ambulance waiting on the shore in Darien. A Stamford fire boat and a Stamford police boat were carrying one of the wounded Stamford EMS ambulances waiting in West Beach, Stamford.
Three of the men were taken to Stamford Hospital. The fourth victim was transported to Norwalk Hospital.
A man has been pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital “after a lengthy life-saving effort,” officials said. A second victim has been pronounced dead, officials said, although it is unclear which hospital.
Initial reports show that three people were unable to return to shore in their 12-foot boat due to northwest winds and rough waves of 3-4 feet. The tide and wind were still carrying the boat out to sea when the last cell phone call was made to a family member by one of those on board, officials said.
The first respondents tried to determine the exact location of the ship due to language barriers and conflicting reports on the location of the boat.
Stamford Emergency Communications Center staff were able to track where the boat’s last phone call was made using 911 cellular tracking software and deployed five lifeboats in the area.
Once in the area, responders found debris believed to be from the boat, as well as from the four men in the water.
Rescue water resources were sent by Darien Police Department, the Noroton Fire Department in Darien, the Greenwich Police Department and the United States Coast Guard to assist in the rescue effort.
The investigation is led by the Connecticut Police for Energy and Environmental Protection.
