The order takes effect in the Shining Tree area at 7 a.m. Monday
The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forests reports three new forest fires in the northeast region and a total of 23 active fires in the region.
Of these active fires, Timmins 1 now measures 1,467 hectares and is located 2 km southeast of the village of Morin and half a km north of Lake Baragher, according to a press release issued by the ministry. This fire is out of control.
The ministry issued an enforcement order requiring the evacuation of the Shining Tree area, including Highway 560 from Meteor Lake Road east to Grassy Road; Nabakwasi Road; all activities within Churchill, Connaut, Miramichi, Asquith Township; and parts of the cities of Garibaldi and Sheard.
The order takes effect at 7 a.m. Monday.
Highway 560 remains closed by Ontario police at the intersection of Highway 144 and Lake Elk.
“No person can enter these areas unless they have received a travel permit from the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forests,” the statement said.
The three new fires reported on Sunday afternoon are: • Chapleau 5 is under control of 1 hectare. It is located approximately 10 km east of the intersection of Highways 101 and 129. • Sudbury 13 covers an area of 4 hectares and is located approximately 3 km east of Sellwood. Air fire operations took place tonight, the fire has not yet been contained. • North Bay 7 is located approximately 15 km west of Latchford. Water bombers were at the site of the 3.5-hectare fire tonight. It is still not under control.
Other active fires in the northeast region include: • Sudbury 4 was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon. This is a fire of 212 hectares, located 3 km east of Esther and 1 km south of the road to Lake Nepevasi. Water bombers, Twin Otters and tank helicopters were on stage Tuesday and Wednesday. Seven firefighters are still working to put out the blaze, which has yet to be contained. • Sudbury 7 was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon. It is a 221-hectare fire located 600 meters north of the Ashigami Road and 0.3 km west of the Ashigami Lake East Road. Water bombers, Twin Otters and tank helicopters were on stage Tuesday and Wednesday. Five teams of firefighters are still working to put out the fire, which has not yet been contained. • Timmins 2 was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon. It is a 57.5-hectare fire located near Duchabani Creek, 1.5 km northwest of Lake Cullen. It is under control. • Kirkland Lake 2 is not yet under control on 44 hectares and was confirmed on Friday west of Twitchgrass. Four teams of firefighters are working on the fire and are making good progress in creating a perimeter around the fire. • Sault Ste. Marie 5 was confirmed on Monday night and is under control of 40 hectares. The fire was located in the Garden River First Nation in the Ojibway Park area.
