A private plane fled the runway as it landed at Essex County Airport in New Jersey on Thursday, ending up in a drainage stream where jet fuel is currently leaking, police said.
The plane – Citation CJ3 Plus 2020 – was descending to land on one of the runways at the airport when a strong crosswind prevented the plane from landing on the runway soon enough, according to the Fairfield Police Department, which responded to the scene.
After traveling briefly on the track, he continued to the grassy area before finally stopping in the drainage stream.
All three men on board, including the pilot, second commander and owner of the aircraft, are unharmed. The three were trying to get off the plane when response teams arrived, cops said.
“We are very relieved that no one was injured in the incident,” Fairfield Police Chief Anthony G. Mana said in a statement.
The plane is currently leaking jet fuel into the stream, police said. The Nutley Fire Department was sent to the scene to help the Fairfield Fire Department control the spill.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified of the incident, according to police.
