A new forest fire has been reported in the northeastern region

The fire near Byala Reka has been contained; there are currently 16 active fires in the region

A new forest fire was confirmed near Wawa on May 16, aviation, forest fires and emergencies said in a statement released today.

Wawa 2 was confirmed this afternoon. This is a fire of 0.1 hectares, located 0.3 kilometers west of the White River. It’s under control.

Including this fire, there are currently 16 active fires in the Northeast region. Active fires include:

  • Timmins 1 was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, two kilometers southeast of the village of Morin and half a kilometer north of Lake Baragher. Firefighting planes worked on the blaze again last night. The fire was rewritten and its perimeter was updated to 1467 hectares. Hwy 560 remains closed by Ontario police at the intersection of Hwy 144 and Elk Lake. For more road closure updates, please consult Ontario 511. This fire remains out of control. The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry in the Timins area has recommended the evacuation of Shining Tree residents. Ontario conservationists and police helped with the precautionary evacuation on Saturday afternoon.
  • Sudbury 4 was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, May 10th. It is a 212-hectare fire located three kilometers east of Estaire and one kilometer south of the road to Lake Nepewassi. Water bombers, Twin Otters and tank helicopters were on stage Tuesday and Wednesday. Seven FireRanger teams are still working to put out this fire, which is not yet under control.
  • Sudbury 7 was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, May 10th. It is a fire of 221 hectares, located 600 meters north of Ashigami Road and 0.3 kilometers west of the eastern road of Lake Ashigami. Water bombers, Twin Otters and tank helicopters were on stage Tuesday and Wednesday. Five FireRanger teams are still working to put out the fire.
  • Timmins 2 was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, May 10th. It is a 57.5-hectare fire located near Duchabani Creek, 1.5 kilometers northwest of Cullen Lake. It’s under control.
  • Kirkland Lake 2 is not yet under control on 44 hectares and was confirmed on Friday west of Lake Twitchgrass. Four FireRanger teams are working on the fire and are making good progress in establishing a perimeter around the fire.
  • Sudbury 11 was confirmed on Friday. This is a fire of 88 hectares, located two kilometers northeast of Lake Mink. It is not under control.
