The federal government is now offering residents a doubling of the number of free rapid COVID antigen tests during its latest round of kit availability, according to an update from the United States Postal Service.
While in previous rounds of test distributions, residents could only apply for up to four per household, residents can now request up to eight of the tests, which will be sent free of charge to their homes.
According to the government, each order could contain eight rapid tests for the COVID-19 antigen. These tests will be available in two separate packages, with four test kits in each package, according to the USPS website.
Delivery of the packages will be free of charge, and tracking numbers will be provided upon registration for the test kits. You can register through the USPS website here.
The White House said in a statement announcing new testing proposals Tuesday morning that approximately 350 million free tests had been delivered nationwide, in U.S. territories and overseas military bases, and said many were delivered by the USPS within 48 o’clock.
“Testing for COVID-19 is a critical tool that helps mitigate the spread of the virus, which is why maintaining internal testing capacity is a key component of the President’s National Preparedness Plan for COVID-19,” the statement said.
Funding for this round of tests comes from the US Rescue Plan, according to the report.
The new proliferation of kits comes as cases of COVID-19 rise again in the United States, which sees a new sub-variant of omicron.
The state of Illinois reports more than 6,000 new cases a day, the highest average since early February.
