A man has been shot while being robbed on a street in Montreal

A pedestrian was shot and injured when he was robbed late Saturday night in Montreal.

The shooting took place around 11:30 p.m. while the young man was walking along rue Dépatie, near rue Cléroux, in the Saint-Laurent district. Police were alerted by 911.

“When police arrived on scene they found the victim, a 19-year-old male. He was conscious and wounded in the upper body by a projectile from a firearm,” said spokesperson for the Montreal Police Department (SPVM), Constable Carolyn Chevrefils.

The victim was transported to a hospital, where his condition is stable.

It appears from all indications that the motive for the crime was robbery.

“Initially, the victim was walking down the street while two suspects followed him on foot. The two then attacked him to steal his personal belongings, at which point one is believed to have shot the victim,” Chevrefils said.

The suspects fled on foot before police arrived. They are still being sought.

“The scene of the incident has been secured for investigators and forensic technicians … The canine unit has been called to the scene to search for evidence,” Chevrefils said.

The SPVM investigation is ongoing.
