Apple’s mixed reality headset could arrive this year • TechCrunch

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will spend most of 2023 focusing on a brand new device — a mixed reality headset that’s been in the works for several years.

The new device may look like a pair of ski goggles, according to an earlier report by The Information. It will include multiple cameras so the device can track your movements in real time and see what’s happening in the real world.

Over the past few years, Apple’s CEO has stated several times that augmented reality is a promising technology. “I think that [AR] the promise is even greater in the future. So it’s a hugely important part of Apple’s future,” Cook told Cara Swisher in 2021.

But it looks like Apple’s upcoming product will offer a mixed reality experience. Users will be able to experience both augmented and virtual reality. Details on potential use cases and applications for the headset are still thin, as software leaks are easier to control than product leaks.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is currently planning to announce the new device during the keynote at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June – Apple may call it Reality Pro. Some developers have already started working on apps for Apple’s new platform. The new operating system for Apple’s headphones may be called xrOS.

WWDC seems like the right stage for this kind of product announcement, as many developers working on third-party apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch pay attention to this event. Having popular apps and games available for this new Apple platform will be key when it comes to ensuring the long-term success of Apple’s headset.

Apple’s 2023 could include a 15-inch MacBook Air and a new Mac Pro

Mark Gurman also spent some time discussing Apple’s roadmap for 2023. And it looks like you shouldn’t expect many surprises outside of the company’s mixed reality headset.

For example, the MacBook Pro, Apple Watch, AirPods, iPad mini, iPad Air, and the base model iPad will only get better components that should improve overall specs. Don’t expect major design updates or new features. Apple TV and iPad Pro will not update at all.

The most significant changes to Apple’s various models may be a 15-inch MacBook Air, the return of the large HomePod, and a brand new Mac Pro. Apple still hasn’t updated the Mac Pro with its own ARM-based chip — it still has an Intel processor. According to Bloomberg, the new Mac Pro will look a lot like the existing Mac Pro.

It will include the M2 Ultra, which you can find in Mac Studio. Unfortunately, users won’t be able to upgrade the RAM due to the company’s unified approach to memory. On paper, it will be hard to convince people to buy a Mac Pro over a Mac Studio. But that doesn’t really matter, as the Mac Pro has never been a significant revenue-generating product.

Of course, there’s one product that’s more important than anything else to Apple—and that’s the iPhone. According to 9to5mac, production of the iPhone 15 is going according to plan. Dynamic Island can make its way to all four models – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

One thing is certain. This year, Apple will comply with the EU mandate and change the iPhone’s charging port from Lightning connector to USB-C. And many iPhone users have been waiting for a simple change like this to upgrade their phone.
